Women security experts in South Korea to strengthen Korea peace process

Press Conference

Women need to be part of the Korea peace process. That is the message of the 30 women security experts, peace activists and women’s rights organizations gathering in South Korea from May 23-26, 2018.

Led by Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire and Women Cross DMZ founder Christine Ahn, the all-women delegation has arrived in Seoul to support the historic peace process between the two Koreas and to ensure that the outcome of the Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore is a Korea Peace Treaty.

“I am deeply moved to be here in Seoul to stand in solidarity with my Korean sisters to proclaim that the war in the Korean Peninsula must be over,” said Mairead Maguire. “Peace is not just a vision, but a right for the people of Korea and I believe passionately that peace is possible.”

Given the critical window for peace or a return to brinkmanship and war, Women Cross DMZ and the Nobel Women’s Initiative urgently call for international solidarity with the peace and feminist movements in Korea.

“We want the leaders from the two Koreas, United States, China and other countries that participated in the Korean War to understand that Koreans and people around the world want this peace process to succeed,” said Christine Ahn. “The greatest assurance that peace, not war, is the outcome is the inclusion of women in the peace process and talks.”

The delegation is comprised of activists and experts from the United States, Russia, China, Japan, Canada, Colombia, Kenya, Sweden, Guam, Iraq and Mongolia, and will close with a peace walk at the DMZ site in Paju.
