This week on Talk World Radio, we delve into the crucial conversation of fostering peace in the midst of conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Joining us is Mairead (Corrigan) Maguire, a distinguished Member of the Advisory Board of World BEYOND War. Hailing from Northern Ireland, Mairead is a Nobel Peace Laureate and the Co-founder of Peace People – Northern Ireland (1976).

Born in 1944 into a family of eight children in West Belfast, Mairead’s journey towards peace activism began at the age of 14. Her commitment to volunteerism led her to work with families, where she played a pivotal role in setting up the first center for disabled children, day care facilities, and youth centers for training local youth in peaceful community service.

Amid the introduction of Internment by the British Government in 1971, Mairead and her companions visited Long Kesh Internment camp, offering support to prisoners and their families affected by various forms of violence. Tragically, Mairead experienced personal loss when three Maguire children, her relatives, lost their lives in August 1976 due to an IRA getaway car incident.

Responding to the violence in her community, Mairead, alongside Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown, organized massive peace demonstrations, calling for an end to bloodshed and a nonviolent resolution to the conflict. Together, they co-founded the Peace People, a movement dedicated to building a just and nonviolent society in Northern Ireland.

The Peace People’s efforts resulted in weekly peace rallies throughout Ireland and the UK, leading to a significant decrease in the rate of violence. In 1976, Mairead and Betty Williams were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their actions to bring about peace and end the violence in Northern Ireland.

Since receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mairead Maguire has continued her tireless work, promoting dialogue, peace, and disarmament globally. She has visited numerous countries, including the USA, Russia, Palestine, North/South Korea, Afghanistan, Gaza, Iran, Syria, Congo, and Iraq.
