We are two women and mothers – one Irish and the one American – who have experienced the loss of children in our families to the senseless violence of war. We hope that none of you will experience such pain. However, we know that our experience is hardly unique, and we have formed advocacy groups to end the violence and hold the leaders, militaries and paramilitaries of our societies accountable for robbing us of our loved ones. Angie Zelter nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize The Scottish Parliament congratulates Angie Zelter, founder member of the anti-nuclear weapons campaign group, Trident Ploughshares, on being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Mairead McGuire, who won the award in 1976, and notes Ms Zelter's 30 years of peace activism, which is seen as inspirational and empowering in Scotland and around the world and which included, in 1999, being acquitted of damage to a Trident research barge in Loch Goil on the basis of what is considered the illegality of the UK's nuclear weapons under international law.

Mairead Maguire and Ann Paterson attend RAUS International Conference In Bonn -Decemeber 2011. In December Mairead and I attended the RAUS international conference in Bonn for a self -determined Afghanistan. The conference brought together some amazing people who got together and looked at how best to support the people of Afghanistan. Mairead opened the conference with a speech that called for a world without war, she said the people of Afghanistan had suffered enough and they had a right to self determation, Mairead also called that NATO should be disbanded.
