OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL AND MEMBER COUNTRIES OF THE COUNCIL TO END THE HUMAN CRISIS OF ROHINGYAS IN MYANMAR

Campaigns, Notices, Press Releases
Dear President and Members of the Security Council, As you are aware, a human tragedy amounting to ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity is unfolding in Myanmar. Over the past two months, a military offensive by the Myanmar Army in Rakhine State has led to the killing of hundreds of Rohingya people. Over 30,000 people have been displaced. Houses have been burned, women raped, many civilians arbitrarily arrested, and children killed. Crucially, access for humanitarian aid organisations has been almost completely denied, creating an appalling humanitarian crisis in an area already extremely poor. Thousands have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, only to be sent back. Some international experts have warned of the potential for genocide. It has all the hallmarks of recent past tragedies - Rwanda, Darfur, Bosnia, Kosovo. The head…

Mairead Maguire – APPEALS FOR POLITICAL LEADERS TO MAKE EXECUTIVE AND ASSEMBLY WORK FOR THE PEOPLE OF NORTHERN IRELAND.

Northern Ireland Assembly, Notices, Press Releases
The vast majority of people in Northern Ireland, whose main desire is to live in peace together, earn a living and raise their families, are currently living in a no-mans land.  Our hands are tied by our elected Politicians, especially both main Parties, Democratic Unionist Party and the Sein Fein, refusing to take up their political responsibilities and sit down together in an Executive and Assembly and reach consensus on what are not insurmountable or life threatening issues.   In the meantime in the community, the fact that the Political decisions on matters of health, education, culture, environment, etc. are in limbo, with funds cut or on hold, lives are being disrupted, destroyed and the frustration and anxiety of the community deepens with no end in sight, no hope to…

A message from Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire:

Campaigns, Events, Notices
The recent siege and bombing of Mosul, in which Britain has taken a significant part, has included harrowing tactics reminiscent of carpet bombing. The bombing has devastated the city and has led to thousands of casualties, largely civilians. The siege started last autumn, which foretells the length of time it will probably take to defeat Isis in Raqqa in Syria, where another bombardment campaign is now being waged. Recent history shows that there is little finality to these military activities. The city of Fallujah, for example, suffered four sieges between 2003 and 2016 (and a range of other atrocities, including the use of chemical weapons and the killing of 20 peaceful protesters against the US occupation in 2003). While Britain's vital public services are being starved of funds, huge…
