TEN YEARS AFTER HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON, ISRAELI NUCLEAR WHISTLEBLOWER MORDECHAI VANUNU IS STILL NOT FREE

Ten years ago today, on April 21, 2004, several hundred of us from around the world waited with great anticipation outside the gates of Israel’s Ashkelon Prison, holding up signs saying “Thank you, Mordechai Vanunu: Peace Hero, Nuclear Whistle-blower”. After many years of campaigning for his freedom, the day had finally arrived: Mordechai Vanunu would walk out of the prison where he had spent each day of his 18 year sentence (12 of those years in solitary confinement) for blowing the whistle on Israel’s then secret nuclear arsenal. We were there to welcome him to freedom. At the invitation of Code Pink, Nobel Peace Laureate, Mairead Maguire, and Ann Patterson, Peace People, agreed to join the Code Pink International Womens’ Delegation to Gaza, through the Egyptian Rafah crossing. The invitation had been extended by Womens’ Organizations in Gaza as they wished to celebrate International Womens Day, and draw attention to the ongoing Blockade of Gaza, by Israeli Government, which is now in its 8th year, and which is a policy causing a humanitarian crisis and deep pain and suffering for the people of Gaza, particularly children and women. On 5th March, 2014 Mairead Maguire and Ann Patterson, members of the Peace People, N.Ireland were deported from Egypt as they attempted to enter the country in order to join an international delegation of 100 women wishing to visit Gaza via the Egyptian Rafah Border. The women from around the world had been invited by the Women of Gaza to join them on 8th March, International Women’s Day. Only 17 of the 100 women were allowed to enter Egypt and those turned away were given no reason for this decision by the Egyptian Government, who later when challenged, said those refused entry to Egypt had been black-listed. PEACE PEOPLE Joins International Delegation of Women to visit Women of Gaza.

In response to a call from the women of Gaza, PEACEPEOPLE Delegation is joining an international coalition of 100 women travelling to Gaza to witness the hardships facing the l.7 million residents, to deliver humanitarian aid, and call attention to the need for a serious strategy to achieve peace and justice for Palestinians. The delegations will attempt to enter Gaza through Egypt at the Rafah border on March 6th. They will be in Gaza for International Womens Day, which is on March 8th, and return to Egypt on March 12th. The delegation will be delivering solar lamps to the women of Gaza, who have been facing severe electricity shortages.
