Northern Ireland man arrested at Faslane
About 200 people have been arrested at Faslane nuclear weapons
base in Scotland during a peaceful nonviolent blockade there
on Monday 1st October to mark the culmination of Faslane365,
a year of resistance. Among those arrested was Mark Chapman
from Belfast who said, “I have travelled here to Faslane
to uphold international law. I believe these nuclear weapons
are causing great instability in the world”.
Mark Chapman, a member of the Peace People executive, was
part of the “Make Trident History” group, which
travelled from Belfast to take part in the blockade. Since
last October 06 over 1,000 people have been arrested, with
51 of these being prosecuted.
Kevin Cassidy, Chair of the Peace People and another member
of the group said.” Many people in Ireland are unaware
of the existence of Faslane ( about 60 miles from Irish coast),
where the U.K.’s nuclear submarine base is situated.
It is here that nuclear missiles/weapons of mass destruction
are transported around the public roads, and carried on board
submarines which travel up and down our coasts. A simple traffic
accident could cause a nuclear holocaust. This blockade is
to close down Faslane and begin nuclear weapon decommissioning”
Faslane365 is a year long blockade of Faslane where the UK’s
nuclear weapons are based. The campaign aims to disrupt the
deployment of weapons of mass destruction. Groups have come
from all across the UK and Europe and even Japan. The blockading
groups come from diverse sectors of society, including health
professionals, Professors, clergy, elected representatives,
clowns, Christians, Buddhists and many others. More information
is available at www.faslane365.org.
