News - Vanunu event in Limerick

31 May 2005

On Tuesday, 31 May, the University of Limerick Palestine Solidarity Society and the Limerick branch of IPSC hosted a Mordechai Vanunu night in Halla Ide, Limerick as part of their Palestinian Awareness week. Peace People participated in the event.

At the invitation of both hosting groups, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Justin Morahan and John Morahan from the Peace People travelled to Limerick for the occasion. Sean Carroll and Maria Escrivano showed a video of their interview with Mordechai in Jerusalem and provided a telephone link to Mordechai Vanunu through which he spoke to the gathering. He sounded as if he were in good form and spoke for fifteen minutes.

Mairead and Justin spoke to an enthusiastic audience and John played the guitar.

Mordechai Vanunu, though free in law after seventeen and a half years of prison, is still not allowed to leave Israel. He continues to be a witness against nuclear proliferation and for the rights of Palestinians.

Sean and Anne Clinton along with Sean and Maria, provided bountiful hospitality. New and welcome links were forged with our Limerick friends which we all hope will bear fruit in the future.
